Wuqinxi: Five Animal Frolics Medical Qigong
by Dr. Jay Dunbar, Ph.D

Five Animals Frolic Qigong
Wuqinxi Qigong is attributed to the physician Hua T'o (?–203 of the modern era). An excellent and delightful lifelong exercise, the Frolics utilize deep, smooth, breathing matched to movements that mimic the crane, bear, monkey, deer and tiger. The aim is to enhance the flow of qi (life energy), harmonize the five elements (fire, water, earth, wood, and metal), strengthen the internal organs, nerves, muscles, and bones, prevent and cure diseases, improve the health and vitality of body, mind, and spirit, and prolong life.

Paul Gallagher, who learned it from Ken Cohen, taught us the basic set in 1988. The author and his wife, Kathleen Cusick, augmented the set as research and insight suggested. The book contains two five-color meditations from Master Jou Tsung Hwa, and directions for movement, breathing, visualizations and suggested health effects for the 42 exercises. 48 pp.

Shíba Luóhàn Gong (18 Luohan Qigong)
by Dr. Jay Dunbar, Ph.D.

Shiba Louhan Gong DVD
The Eighteen (Shíba) Luohan Qigong combines internal cultivation of qì (, : energy), tranquility, and consciousness with development of external physical strength, vigor, and flexibility. Dynamic yet meditative, challenging yet fun, the set is said to be 1,500 years old, attributed to Bodhidharma, a patriarch of Indian Buddhism and founder of the Chán (Zen) sect in China. According to legend, he taught the Luohan exercises to the monks of the Shaolin Temple to fortify their bodies and deepen their meditation. With elements of yoga asanas and martial art, the set involves body, mind, breath, and spirit in an ancient ritual designed to foster health, longevity, and perhaps even enlightenment.

This DVD is not only to assist the practice of those proficient in the set, but also to teach the set to those who would learn it. As such it is appropriate for beginners. It contains over an hour of indoor instruction, with separate movement and breathing sections in rear-view and mirror-image for each Luohan, a rear-view, mirror-image review of the entire set, and a full outdoor front-view performance. Frequent chapter marks make navigation easy. Total length: 126 minutes.
